Why you shouldn't call the police for many circumstances.

January 7, 2014

I get emails all the time from people who are mad at the police for not helping them.

This post should serve as information for these people, but everyone else might benefit from knowing this.

There are two reasons you should now rely on the police. First, they are hired to protect and to serve, but they get to decide who they get to protect and who they get to serve. You might think that's not right because you pay their salaries, and there are even some good reasons for why this is that i'll explain in a minute. But the bottom line is if you are relying on them to help you whether you are getting robbed, raped, attacked, or the crime is already over - don't expect much help.

The second reaosn is because of situations where police get called, and they end up doing more harm that good. This is the second story i've read this month where the cops were called and some kid got shot and killed. You can read the story at these links.

The police are not good at handling family situations at all. It's better to try to handle them yourself. In disputes where husbands and wives are fighting - they need more than just someon to come break up the fight. Usually the police come, things get worse, someone gets arrested, the family situation gets worse, someone could get sent to jail for a long time, etc. When they are out of jail, they return home, and the same old thing happens again. These people need other means of getting out of these situations like counseling - professional or from a friend or support group - and they need to get their lives in order. In this case they are either depending on the police to help them - which they will not, or they are using the police as a tool to be counter abusive - which is also bad.

Now the reason that police get to pick and choose which crimes to prosecute, which is backed by the supreme court, is because there simply aren't enough resources for the police to handle every situation that may arise. This is the main reason I encourage people to learn self defense, and if you feel comfortable with it, but and learn to use a gun. There are also scenarios where even if the police wanted to help you, the crime might be done with by the time the police arrive.

When it comes to police and prosecutors picking and choosing which crimes they want to enforce, a lot of it also comes down to how easy it is to find the criminal and then to prove to a jury that he's guilty. And unfortunately sometimes they don't even care about getting the right guy - if the crime is easy enough to prosecute they'll happily throw an innocent person in prison. Say for example some kid gets busted with a bag of pot. Whether it's true or not, they tell him he's going to get 5 years if he goes to trial, 1 year if he pleas guilty, or 6 months probation if he snitches on someone. So he rats out and old acquiantance that he doesn't like very well but never broke the law. The snitch will testify that the person was selling him drugs - and he won't rat out his drug dealer because he knows that might get him killed - and an innocent person is now in the spot light. The innocent person is now given the option to take 10 years for selling drugs if he tries to fight it, but he is told that he has a witness who will testify bought drugs from the innocent person - or he can plea guilty and take 2 years, or snitch again and take a few months probation. The innocent person not willing to put another innocent person in his place, and not wanting to do 10 years, pleas guilty and takes the 2 years. This happens all the time. The police and the prosecutors don't care because they get their numbers up.

When someone breaks into your house and steals your TV - the chances the police will ever find it are slim to none. If they do find it, chances are you don't have your serial number written down so they wont return it to you. When your house gets robbed and you call the cops, you're pretty much just reporting statistics.

If someone breaks into your house and you're there and you call the cops, the cops can get there, ring the bell, hear no response and leave. Or they could get there after the burgarlar has already killed you. That's a bad plan. You keep a fire extinguisher in your home to defend yourself against fires so your house doesn't burn down waiting for the fire department. You should learn to defend yourself as best as you can so you can stay alive and defend your property.

Police do catch criminals and they aren't all bad guys. But especially in the environment where they are not afraid to shoot an innocent person because they are in a bad mood and they know they won't get fired, it's dangerous to call the police.
